Most dogs love the taste of sweet potatoes and they are very healthy for your pup. Sweet potatoes are low in fat and rich in dietary fiber. They are also a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin C and manganese.

Like carrots, these vegetables are rich in beta-carotene, an antioxidant that converts to vitamin A when your dog's body processes it. Vitamin A is an essential nutrient for proper growth, muscle strength and vision.

Sweet potatoes can also help soothe an upset stomach.

Homemade Sweet Potato and Turkey Dog Treats

I used some leftover turkey to make these treats. You can use fresh turkey, ground turkey, or another protein source if you wish.

You can substitute beef, venison, or fish for the turkey, if your dog prefers. You can also make several batches with different protein sources to add some variety to your pet's snacks.

  • 1/2 cup mashed sweet potato (plain)
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups cooked turkey (diced)
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour

Preheat your oven to 350°F.

In a bowl, combine mashed sweet potatoes, water and egg. Stir until evenly mixed.

Add the turkey and flour and combine until a dough forms. The dough will be thick and sticky.

Spread the dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. It should be about 1/4-1/2″ thick.

Using a butter knife, cut the dough into small squares the right size for your dog.

Bake the treats for 30 minutes. They will brown. They will still be slightly moist and soft.

If you want the treats to be crispy, bake them for an additional 20 to 30 minutes.

Once the treats have cooled completely, you can separate them on the marked lines. You can give them to your dog in moderation as soon as they have cooled down.
