Top 10 ways to exercise with your dog

by Bella Woof

Obesity is a problem for both humans and dogs. Whether you or your pet, being overweight or obese can lead to heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and even cancer. That's bad news. The good news is that you can work on improving weight with your dog. One of the best ways to do this is to exercise with your dog.

Consult your veterinarian before exercising with your dog. Certain exercises, such as running or jogging, are not recommended for puppies whose bones have not yet fully grown and some short-legged dog breeds. Short-legged dogs don't need to walk as much as larger dogs. Also, keep in mind that short-nosed dog breeds may have difficulty breathing.

With these considerations in mind, here are 10 ideas for how you and your dog can exercise together.

1. Go hiking

Hiking is a great way to exercise with your dog. However, if you're not used to intense exercise, start with a walk and build up from there. If you don't have time, try waking up a little early and taking your dog for a 10-minute walk or hike. If your schedule allows, he should take three walks a day, with one of her walks lasting at least 20 minutes.

2. Eat fewer snacks

Instead of giving your dog treats, give them attention. Dogs love to be touched. If you want to give your dog a treat, split it in half and save the other half for another day. The snacks for you are the same, you eat half today and the other half tomorrow. That way, you won't feel a sense of loss.

3. Go to the dog park

If possible, walk to the dog park. When you get there, throw a tennis ball with your dog. We both exercise.

4. Go swimming

Swimming is a low-impact exercise that you and your dog can do together.

5. Jogging or running

Find a truck that welcomes dogs and take your pup for a run. It's one of the best cardio workouts. Bring a water bottle and collapsible bowl so you and your dog stay hydrated.

6.Tug of war

Play a game of tug of war with your dog. It helps to develop upper body strength and allows your dog to have fun playing with you.

7. Play catch

Whether it's a ball, a Frisbee, or your pup's favorite toy, go outside and play a game of fetch.

8. Have fun even on rainy days

Don't let a rainy day get in the way of your exercise goals. If your apartment or home has stairs, go up and down a few steps at a time (remember to start slowly). If you have a treadmill at home, you and your dog can use it too.

9. Sign up for an exercise class

You and your dog can take agility classes or even “doga,” a form of yoga designed for both of you.

10. Resistance Walk

Resistance walks are great in any weather. Walk your dog in the snow, on the sand, in the shallows of a beach, or along a leafy path.
